Wawa - Michipicoten 1908
This superb collection of photographs were commissioned by the Algoma Steel and Lake Superior Power Corporation out of Sault Ste. Marie. There are a small collection of folks who still have original copies that seem to have come in a set of about 24 different scenes. These are some of the most recognizable.
In 1908, Wawa and the Michipicoten region were booming with industrial development. Miners were staking their claims for gold and iron, Michipicoten Harbour was up and running, the Algoma Central Railway was busy freighting men, equipment, wood and iron to the Helen Mine, and a number of properous gold mines were enjoying the fruits of Wawa's first gold boom of the 20th century.
